Product Designer

2018-2020

I was the first designer hired at ThisWay Global, a Series A startup at the time, with the goal of shaping the visual identity and user interface for their AI-powered product, Ai4JOBS. This was before the AI craze of the early 2020s, but through 15 trillion matching events, ThisWay Global created their algorithm to mitigate both conscious and unconscious biases in early stages of the hiring process. These biases—such as affinity bias, gender bias, name bias, and confirmation bias—often skew decisions as to whether or not an applicant moves into the interview process. Ai4JOBS' application aimed to remove identifying information that could introduce bias, ensuring that the focus remained on applicants' skills and qualifications, rather than personal characteristics or demographic factors.

The Initiatives

As with any fast-paced startup, we were driven by ambitious goals and a vision to make a meaningful impact. As the sole designer, I was entrusted with key objectives to bring that vision to life:

Create a User Interface From Scratch

We aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the specific use cases and workflows of the users who rely on the dashboard daily to monitor and detect security anomalies in their application and sites.

Minimize Conscious and Unconscious Bias

We carefully designed the interface to hide information that could unintentionally influence the hiring process.  This initiative extended into our design system, where we kept UI component embellishments to a minimum to avoid creating any components that could distract or unintentionally influence the user’s decisions.

Help Establish a Brand Identity

Balancing two critical responsibilities—crafting a cohesive and compelling brand while simultaneously designing the product interface—required careful prioritization, time management and vision.

Unbiased Matching UXUI

Ai4JOBS featured a standalone UI while also offering integrations into leading Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), requiring the experience to be flexible and cohesive across platforms.

Redacting Specific Information

Our goal to minimize bias posed a unique challenge in designing the user interface. We implemented a kanban-style layout, ensuring no single applicant was given unintentional emphasis. This provided a comprehensive, bird’s-eye view of all candidates, including those who hadn’t directly applied but might still be a good fit for the role. While we kept the design simple and neutral to avoid influencing perceptions, it was crucial to include a clear match score to objectively assess each candidate and how they matched the desired job requirements.

Establishing a Brand Identity

A strong visual presence was important to set us apart in a competitive market. I led the creation of a cohesive digital brand identity, developing comprehensive guidelines, and shaping the overall look, feel, and voice. The goal was to craft an image that resonated with recruiters and HR professionals, effectively communicating our value proposition and building strong B2B relationships.

Website Design Concept

As the first point of contact for potential customers, it was essential that the websitre not only reflected our brand's identity but also clearly communicated the value of our product.

Brand Presence IRL

In addition to designing the user interface of our Ai4JOBS product, I created the imagery and branding collateral, including the branding we presented at the 2019 HR Tech Conference in Las Vegas.

Storyboarding

Our Salesforce integration was a significant milestone, and we wanted to showcase it with a video annoucement. I created storyboard sketches and managed communication with the animators to bring the concept to life.
