Reimagined Security Experience:

Principal Product Designer

2022-2024

After a merger with Edgecast, the edge computing, CDN and streaming delivery service formerly owned by Yahoo!/Verizon Media, we took a hard look at the UX of the now legacy platform that offered the critical protection many large enterprise companies relied on. With this merger, the Edgio platform gain a robust catalog of cybersecurity and bot mitigation products and a reimagined UIUX was needed to reflect this new chapter.

As the sole designer in the Applications department, I had the opportunity to be the point of contact for gathering feedback, facilitating discussions, and managing and spearheading the overall direction of the design process and desired outcome.

The Challenges

Cybersecurity is inherently complex due to the dynamic and evolving nature of threats and the need to protect a wide range of assets. In order to effectively design solutions, I dedicated time to educate myself about technical functionality and concepts. Collaborating with engineers and security expects was vital as we worked to overcome these challenges:

Balancing Usability and Advanced Functionality

Overhauling Preexisting UXUI

Revising and Improving Exisiting User Flow

Understanding Complex Security Concepts

// The Challenges

Overhauling Preexisting UXUI

Visually, the legacy UI was lacking. It felt antiquated and not align with modern design standards. Additionally, there was no clear visual hierachy, making it difficult for Users to intuitively navigate and prioritize important information and functionality.
// The Challenges

Revising and Improving Exisiting User Flow

With the hierarchical structure shown in the chart below, Users naturally gravitated to creating the SAM first, however if there are no rule configurations to put within the SAM, User would hit a dead end. Users were then required to back track.

The Initiatives

From interviews, feedback and observations, the path to improve our product became clearer.
Here are some of the main initiatives:

Provide Entirely New Look and Feel

We completely replaced the outdated UI and experience with a modern, refreshed design, focusing on simplicity, functionality, and user-centric navigation.

Introduce a Iconography System

By assigning distinct, intuitive icons to each rule category, we made it easier for users to quickly identify the type of rule in question, as well their individual statuses.

Redesign and Unify The Configuration Flow

The current flow was disjointed, and it was common for Users to have to backtrack steps. We revised this so Users had access to perform any missed tasks at any point in their journey. This provided guidance, as well as flexibility to cater to all work flows.

Harmonize Design System

This was a part of a larger initiative to harmonize and add interactivity to our component library.

Improve System Feedback and Visability

The current experience lacked feedback at key points during the user journey, leading to confusion and requiring Users to seek clarifiers. Users can have multiple rules for each rule type, so it was important that we surface the user-generated rule name in the overview page.

Next-Level UI: Security Application Manager UI Redesign

The Security Application Manager was the central hub for all configurations, with users often managing over 50 settings. Given the importance of this UI, we redesigned it to offer both a detailed for visibility and list view for a more condensed view.

Iconography

Along with designated icons, each rule type has multiple states dependent on whether it is assigned to Production or Audit, or both. For rules to prevent a cyberattack, it must be assigned as the Production Rule, represented in blue. Applying a rule to an Audit, represented in orange.

Color Accessibility

Blue and orange was chosen for their strong contrast, being easily distinguishable for Users, including those with color vision deficiencies. Because Audit-only rules do not provide protection, it was important we chose a color that conveyed caution.

Next-Level UI: Configuration Redesign

We completely redesigned the configuration experience and flow for our robust cybersecurity product, streamlining complex processes and empowered users with a more intuitive and seamless setup.
Initiative Solution

Improving System Feedback and Visability

We introduced many new components, states and interactions to enhance the visual experience and improve general understanding of our security product offerings.

Conclusion & Impact

The redesign of the Security Application Manager was one of the first initiatives I took on after my promotion to Principal Product Designer, but had the most immediate impact on our internal and external users.
Users reported:

Improved Confidence In Their Security Configurations

Greater Ease of Use and Understanding

Improved Visual Experience

More Trust In Edgio Products, Because Of The Improved Look and Feel
